Today we woke up in our cozy, tiny homes and had a hearty breakfast at our hotel. I had eggs benedict but with local smoked Scottish salmon instead of ham. It was delicious and so fresh. Today our agenda included a scenic drive around the island to take in as much of the scenic landscape as possible. We saw some beautiful scenery on our drive to the island yesterday, but the more we drove around the island the more beauty we beheld. There are a wide variety of stops you can make on this scenic loop which mostly takes you around the major highway on the island. We picked out the ones we wanted ahead of time and used Google maps to plan it all out in order. Our first stop was Brides Veil Falls. For the most part we have had mild weather in Scotland so far. It’s very cold and gray and mists rain from time to time but nothing too bad. Today however, Skye showed us some of the famous Scottish unpredictability. You can see on my face in this picture that the wind was intense and also dumping rain directly in my face which is horribly cold. We still did enjoy this waterfall though.

Our next stop was Lealt Falls which is deep in a gorge and goes out to the ocean. There is a nice viewpoint you can walk down to see views of the sea and shoreline. It’s amazing to see the different geological elements on the island and know that this is the results of millions of years of changes in the elements.

Next we went in search of dinosaur footprints. There is a beach that has some a little further up the road. The tide was too high for us to find them but we did see the sign and actually stood on the beach which is close enough to where dinosaurs walked for us.

Next stop was Kilt Rock and falls. This is a volcanic rock that has folds in it like a kilt and a beautiful waterfall coming off of the cliff. At almost every stop we could see sheep grazing peacefully. So of course we had to try and get as many pictures as possible.

The scenery of the place is unmatched. I have traveled around the world and never seen anything quite like this. There is a magical beauty here even though a lot of the foliage is dead and brown. The roads are narrow and curvy and around every corner there is a new breathtaking view. We stopped at a little cafe to get a hot drink and dessert on our drive. It was a much needed stop after being out in the cold.

Our next stop required a short hike. The Fairy Glen is what it’s called and I can see why. It is one of the most magical, beautiful places I’ve ever seen. Well worth the walk to get to it. Everywhere you look are different shades of foliage and types of rocks. It’s honestly difficult to even describe and I’m not even sure the photos do it justice. We also finally got some sunshine peeking through while walking so it added an extra magical light to everything.

Next we headed to Uig, a little town on the Northwest corner of the island. We checked out Uig Pottery which is a locally owned family store where they sell a variety of handmade goods. We found several wonderful trinkets to take home. I always like to buy locally made things when I travel. It brings a little bit of that place with you and gives you memories of your travels whenever you see it. After shopping we needed some refreshment so we got a recommendation for the restaurant in Uig Hotel. Located right across the street from the seaside cliffs the hotel has amazing views. Mom and I got fish chowder and Scott got a fish pie. All with fresh fish of course. The chowder was excellent and the chunks of salmon just melted in my mouth. It was creamy but not heavy. It was just what we needed to regain some strength after sight seeing. After that we headed back to the hotel to rest before dinner.
We went to the hotel bar before dinner for a drink and I had a nice locally brewed Skye beer. The ingredients listed Fairy Glen water as an ingredient which is where we were earlier so that felt extra special. For dinner we stayed at the hotel restaurant, Frasers. We just couldn’t imagine eating anywhere else when the food is so amazing. Scott and I shared the smoked scallops for an appetizer. I did not get a picture but the dish was served under a cloche with the delicious smoke trapped underneath. They reveal the scallops at the table. For the main course, I had crispy gnocchi that were like delicious little pillows on top of fresh tomato sauce with green veggies. I finished off the meal with the panna cotta with red fruit sauce. So yummy and light. A perfect way to end our final night in Skye.
